Gardening Thymes is a fantastic grassroots programme for anyone interested in gardening and it’s right on the doorstep of Greatfield residents. It was started by Active Newham five years ago, but the volunteers were encouraged to take on the running of the group and the gardening sessions are now entirely volunteer-run. They set their own agenda, driven by their passions, then as a group teach themselves how to put these into practice.
Within the Central Park bowling green they have thirteen fruit trees and eight beds to grow vegetables and herbs. Over the winter the group were busy planting asparagus, garlic, broad beans and peas. They are teaching themselves about crop rotation, growing and training grapevines and permaculture. They have also just ordered lots of worms to help improve the soil! What the group plants or what they decide to learn about, is all driven by their own interests.
The group is also a great place to meet people, get involved in other community activities and learn about foraging.

‘It’s great because it’s sociable and good exercise. You can learn other things apart from gardening such as fundraising and running events. It’s a nice way to support others and make friends’
